The PilsenCUBE II satellite sensor probe has reached a height of over 30 km

In early December, the team of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FEE) took part in the flight of the elevated stratospheric balloon held by SOSA (Slovak Organization for Space Activities) in cooperation with the Czech Mars Expedition 2018.

The goal of the FEE team consisting of Ivo Veřtát, Jiří Masopust and Pavel Fiala was to verify, in particular, a miniature camera for the visible light area and an infrared thermal camera at high altitudes above the cloud for later use in miniature satellites.

This flight was able to reach a maximum height of approximately 32.5 km, which was about 10 km higher than the previous flight from the Polish Torun.

The camera tested took a series of beautiful photos during the double layer of cloud when reaching the maximum height, including a unique shot on the balloon shortly after rupture.

"Even the experiments of other teams were also very interesting and included both biological and technical experiments, such as receiving ADS-B air traffic, monitoring the impact of extreme conditions on bacteria and measuring the speed of sound at different altitudes. Students from elementary schools to Czech and Slovak universities participated ", adds Ivo Veřtát, who also thanks to the organizers from SOSA, the staff of the Malý Bielice Observatory and local airport staff for pleasantly spent moments and great organization of the event.
